Frequently Asked Questions

Have a few more questions before taking the next step?
Therapy can sometimes be intimidating and you may have several questions before getting started. This page contains FAQ about Choosing You Counselling & Psychotherapy. However, if you cannot find what you are looking for please do not hesitate to reach out on our contact page.

Currently, Choosing You services are virtual and can be done by either telephone or secure video. We use an encrypted teletherapy platform with our clients.  Together, you and your counsellor will determine how to set up sessions in a way that feels private, safe and comfortable.

Choosing You services do not require a referral from your physician, however, a referral may be required by your extended health benefits in order to cover mental health services. We encourage you to inquire with your insurance provider to understand these details.

Psychotherapy and counselling services are not currently covered by OHIP (Ontario Health Insurance Plan) but are covered by most private health insurance plans.  After you have paid for the session by e-transfer, your counsellor will give you a receipt that includes their professional registration number to submit to your insurance provider. Please check with your insurance provider to verify your coverage includes Registered Psychotherapists.

No, your therapist does not bill your insurance provider. Once you have paid for your session, your therapist will provide you with a receipt that you can submit to your insurance provider for reimbursement.

Having an online therapy session is easy! Once you select a time for your online counselling session, you will receive an email with a link to our secure online platform.  Online counselling sessions are best experienced on a computer or laptop using Chrome or Firefox. If you’re on an iOS device (iPhone, iPad) you will need the Jane Online Appointments application which is available on the app store.

Please note we also offer phone sessions if you would prefer.

We require 24 hours notice if you cannot attend your scheduled session. If you cancel with less than 24 hours notice you will be charged the full session fee.

A 50 minute session is $185 including HST and can be paid via e-transfer or credit card.

Choosing You is not an emergency service. If you are experiencing immediate distress or are in danger, please present yourself to the nearest emergency room or call 9-1-1.

“Psychotherapy occurs when the Registered Psychotherapist (RP) and client enter into a psychotherapeutic relationship where both work together to bring about positive change in the client’s thinking, feeling, behaviour and social functioning. Individuals usually seek psychotherapy when they have thoughts, feelings, moods and behaviours that are adversely affecting their day-to-day lives, relationships and the ability to enjoy life.” – CRPO

Practicing psychotherapy became a regulated profession in Ontario in December 2019, this means that only individuals with the necessary qualifications and registration can practice psychotherapy. There are minimum educational requirements, continuing education requirements, assessments, experience and supervision requirements and adherence to a code of ethics that an individual must comply with in order to be in good standing with the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario (CRPO). Psychotherapists cannot diagnose, provide assessments or prescribe medication.
